Nation : Mercedes Pays Record U.S. Fine
Mercedes-Benz North America has paid a $20.2-million fine, the largest yet imposed for failing to meet government energy-conserving mileage standards, the Department of Transportation said today.
The company paid the fine for not complying with the corporate average fuel economy standard on its 1986 model cars, said Tim Hurd, spokesman for the department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The largest fine previously paid was $8.8 million by Jaguar for not meeting the mileage goals on its 1985 models, Hurd said.
