TV’s desertion of Sacramento legislative news is actually a long-hidden, frank admission that TV is not a new medium (“TV Tunes Out Sacramento,” Dec. 22).
Despite the claims of TV people, they are limited to a carnival-vaudeville concept of their function.
The location of the Capitol away from the biggest news centers, unlike most states, means simply that TV must make a larger investment in order to make good its claim that it fulfills a news responsibility in California.
In my former state, seven newspapers shared the cost of a six-man state government bureau and wire 50 years ago.
Steve Mallory is a crackerjack newsman and his satellite news service in Sacramento offers a very logical solution to TV’s cost problem. TV’s public-responsibility problem can be solved only by some soul-searching.
