Nation : Koop Starts Battered-Women Drive

WASHINGTON —
Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and a leading doctor, concerned by increases in physical and sexual assaults on women, began a campaign today to help physicians detect and assist battered victims.
Koop and Luella Klein, former president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, noted at a news conference that doctors who care for women play a vital role because they are in a position to see abuse first. Yet many physicians are not trained to identify abuse, they said.
