Acting Justice Harold Rothwax in New York ordered accused child killer Joel Steinberg to be examined by a prosecution psychiatrist in anticipation of a last-minute insanity defense. Steinberg’s lawyers have indicated they might present an insanity defense in summations, but have said they would delay their decision until nearly all of their 20 witnesses testify. Steinberg, a disbarred lawyer, is accused of beating to death Lisa Steinberg, 6, the girl he and his lover Hedda Nussbaum raised but never adopted. His second-degree murder trial resumed after a two-week break.
