Local News in Brief : Infant in INS Custody an 8-Month Mystery

Share

U.S. immigration authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying an infant boy who was taken into custody in San Diego, along with two Mexican smugglers and a group of illegal aliens from Uruguay almost eight months ago. Authorities speculate that the parents or legal guardians may be in the Los Angeles area.

The child, believed to be slightly more than 1 year old, has been dubbed “Baby Marcos” after a name initially employed by one of the smugglers. No one seems to know his parents, legal guardians or country of origin. The dark-haired baby is in good health and is being cared for by a foster family.

While it is not unusual for immigration agents to find smuggled infants, officials say this is the first case in which they have been unable to locate a parent or legal guardian for such a long period.

Officials have vowed not to arrest the parents of Baby Marcos, even if they are illegal aliens. Anyone with information is asked to call the Immigration and Naturalization Service in San Diego. All calls will be kept confidential.
