U.S. Workers, Not Corporate Raiders, Are Indispensable to Nation’s Economy

Regarding the Dec. 22 commentary by James Flanigan, “The Real Cost of Fraud: Jobs of Average Worker”:

I have read and heard all the verbiage about the Drexel Burnham Lambert fraud case and its fallout. Most of it has dealt with what effect this has on the securities industry, with such shining stars such as Michael Milken, corporate raiders and various deal makers who profit from, but contribute nothing to, our national economic fabric.

It appeared to me that the media was concerned exclusively with persons and organizations whose credo is greed and with their ability to accumulate more wealth. But then I read James Flanigan’s column in your Business section. He zeroed in on the one victim of all this fraud, deceit and greed who really matters, the average worker. I want to thank Flanigan for reminding us that our country is not only made up of Drexel Burnham Lambert, Milken, Ivan F. Boesky and T. Boone Pickens Jr. but also people who grow our food, mine our coal, bake our bread and make our cars.
