Carolina Prokofiev; Widow of Composer

The widow of Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, who spent three years in a Soviet prison camp after her husband was denounced by Stalin in 1948, has died at the age of 91, her son, Oleg, said Thursday.

He said Carolina Prokofiev, a trained singer who was born in Madrid, died of cancer in London on Tuesday.

The couple lived in Paris before moving to the Soviet Union in 1936.

The composer, whose output included piano concertos, the children’s classic “Peter and the Wolf” and scores for Russian film director Sergei Eisenstein, was denounced for writing “bourgeois” music. He died five years later.

His wife was accused of having contact with anti-Soviet elements and sent to a prison camp. She was freed three years later and divided her time between London, Paris and New York before settling in London two years ago.
