Philippine troops backed by helicopter gunships stormed a military garrison held by dissident police officers, ending a three-day standoff that left 16 dead, including the garrison commander and his chief of staff, both of whom had been taken hostage. Military officials said they believed all the dissidents were killed when troops attacked the Philippine Constabulary regional headquarters in Zamboanga, about 500 miles south of Manila. The garrison was seized by eight police officers who had been fired and ordered held in connection with a murder investigation. They were later joined by a handful of armed supporters.
