Advanced Micro Devices intends to sell its Manila, Philippines, assembly plant and gradually move operations to a new automated plant in Bangkok, Thailand.

The semiconductor company, which has headquarters in Sunnyvale, reached a tentative agreement to sell the Manila plant to Amkor Electronics of Seoul, South Korea. The companies did not disclose terms of the sale, which is subject to approval by the Philippine government.

Anthony Holbrook, AMD president and chief operating officer, said the move is part of a plan to open an automated assembly and testing facility in Thailand. AMD has been working on the Thailand plant since 1985. The 157,000-square-foot plant is essentially complete, but AMD executives said they will phase in production slowly.
