World : Jerusalem Soccer Stadium OKd
Israel’s Supreme Court today cleared the way for construction of a soccer stadium in Jerusalem, a move opposed by ultra-Orthodox Jews who fear that weekend games will desecrate the Sabbath.
The ruling, which orders the Interior Ministry to sign the building permit, ended a 15-year battle to get the athletic field built, according to the office of Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek.
Kollek hailed the decision as a victory for Jerusalem’s youth, who must travel to the coastal city of Jaffa to see Betar Jerusalem, the team with the largest following.
