More than 600 North Korean art works have arrived in South Korea, marking the first direct trade between the two rival Korean states, government officials said Sunday.

The paintings and pottery, worth $104,000, were imported by Daewoo Corp. of Seoul in a deal with a North Korean trading firm, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

It was the first direct deal between the two Koreas since the Seoul government lifted a ban on trade with the north in October, as part of a new policy of seeking improved relations with the Communist state.

The art works will be sold to the public after display at major department stores, the officials said. It was not known how the goods arrived in South Korea.
