Two hand grenades hurled into the crowd at a basketball tournament killed at least 13 people and wounded 78 in the southern Philippines, the military said. The official Philippines News Agency, quoting a radio station, put the death toll in Esperanza at 26, most of them children. Police said a Muslim youth speeding away on a motorcycle was arrested moments after the attack. He was not immediately identified. A motive for the bombing in the region, 600 miles south of Manila, where Muslim separatists and Communist guerrillas operate, was not immediately known, but there was speculation that it may have been triggered by heavy betting on the home team, which lost the championship game to a visiting team.
