Japan will continue voluntary restraints in its auto exports to the United States for the eighth straight year, the Japanese trade minister said. Japan exported 2.21 million cars to the United States in fiscal 1987, which ended in March, 1988. The self-imposed quota is 2.3 million autos a year. Japanese auto makers had little reaction to the minister’s statement, saying tersely that they would accept the measures. Nissan and Honda, the country’s No. 2 and No. 3 auto manufacturers, have fallen short of their export quotas, but Toyota, the nation’s largest auto maker, has been fulfilling its estimated 450,000 to 500,000 car share annually.
