Security Exercise Snarls Naval-Base Traffic
Traffic leading to the gate of the 32nd Street Naval Station was snarled for a mile Tuesday morning because of a random exercise designed to evaluate security measures, base authorities said.
Identity cards are routinely shown at the gate, spokeswoman Julie Swan said, but “this time we asked the drivers to hand the card physically to the sentry so the sentry could take a closer inspection.”
There was no increase in the level of security at the base, and the exercise was not a response to a threat, Swan said.
“We were conducting a training and self-evaluation of our security measures on the naval station,” she said.
