U.N. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar was awarded the Olof Palme prize Tuesday and said the cash will be used to set up a scholarship for students to study peacekeeping.

Perez de Cuellar received the $16,000 from Lisbet Palme, widow of the former Swedish prime minister and outspoken disarmament supporter who was slain by an unknown gunman in 1986.

She said that Perez de Cuellar’s devoted leadership of the United Nations has restored world hope for peace.

Since 1987, the Olof Palme prize, established in his memory by his family and the Social Democratic Party, has been awarded each year for outstanding achievement in the field of international understanding and common security.
