Weekend TV : NAACP, Cable Awards Share Spotlight With Variety of Views on the Presidency

It’s a weekend for awards and another friendly presidential farewell.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Whitney Houston, Eddie Murphy and Clint Eastwood are among the big names participating in the 21st annual “NAACP Image Awards,” tonight at 11:30 on Channels 4, 36 and 39. Taped last month at the Wiltern Theatre, the awards honor artistic excellence and the positive portrayal of minorities in television, films and recordings.

Sunday, cable trots out its finest for the 10th Annual ACE Awards for excellence in cable-TV programming, airing live from the Wiltern at 6 p.m. on TBS, the Discovery Channel, Black Entertainment Television, the CBN Family Channel, FNN and TNT and at 9 p.m. on USA, Lifetime and Nickelodeon. “Night Court’s” Harry Anderson hosts cable’s answer to the Emmys.

At 11 p.m. Sunday, Clifton Davis and Jackee host “The 10th Black Achievement Awards” on KHJ-TV Channel 9.

Meanwhile, Mike Wallace conducts a farewell interview with the President and the First Lady on Sunday at 7 p.m. on “60 Minutes.” The talk with Ronald and Nancy Reagan, their final television appearance before leaving the White House next week, will cover a wide range of topics spanning the President’s eight-year term.
