The Treasury Department has suspended a Jan. 4 decision by its Customs Service to reclassify imported all-purpose vehicles as trucks, making them liable for a 25% tariff, U.S. officials said. Many had been classified as cars with a 2.5% duty. The Treasury officials said the 25% duty was suspended after complaints by Japanese manufacturers of the sports utility vehicles and small vans. They said the Treasury would likely make a final ruling on the issue next week. Most of the 250,000 such vehicles shipped each year, chiefly from Japan, had been classified as cars. Pending a final decision, the officials said, the higher duty will be put in escrow and returned if the levy is permanently dropped.
