Local : Gunman Yields After 6-Hour Siege
A gunman surrendered early today to end a six-hour standoff with authorities who surrounded his Hermosa Beach home after he fired a gun during an argument with his wife, officials said.
Two young children were found asleep and unharmed in a bedroom of the home at 736 Monterey Blvd. following the surrender of their father, Michael Barnum, 32, at 6 a.m., police Cmdr. Anthony Altfeld said. The incident began shortly after midnight when police received a call from a neighbor who had heard the gunshot. When officers arrived, they saw Barnum standing in his doorway, holding a semiautomatic handgun, Altfeld said. The Sheriff’s Department sent its Special Weapons Team while other officers urged the man to surrender.
