From Times Staff and Wire Service Reports

Doug Sams announced today he will resign effective Feb. 1 as Urbana University’s head football coach after a year on the job.

Sams came here a year ago from the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

Neither Sams or the university would comment on his reason for leaving or his future.

The Urbana Daily Citizen reported today, however, that he would accept a job as an assistant coach for the offensive backfield, receivers and special teams with the CFL’s Ottawa Rough Riders.

A university spokesman reporting Sams’ resignation said he was told the Rough Riders have called a news conference for tomorrow in Ottawa.
