Paleontologist Richard Leakey who continued his parents’ research into the early origins of man, has resigned as director of the state-run National Museums of Kenya, a newspaper said Saturday.

The Kenya Times, publication of the ruling Kenya Africa National Union, quoted Leakey as saying he had resigned to aid in reorganization of the museums.

The newspaper said the resignation of the 44-year-old Leakey followed the appointment of a new board for the museum by Kenyan Vice President Josephat Karanja.

Leakey is the son of the late Louis and Mary Leakey, whose archeological discoveries at Olduvai Gorge and elsewhere in East Africa pointed to an African origin for mankind.
