From Times wire services

The U.S. Embassy announced today that it has advised Americans who are private citizens to leave Afghanistan.

Jon D. Glassman, charge d’affaires at the American Embassy, said the situation in Afghanistan, where Soviet troops are withdrawing, is reaching “a critical point,” and he urged Americans to get out while commercial air service is still operating. Only the Soviet airline Aeroflot, using military planes, and the Afghan airline Ariana are still operating out of Kabul’s airport.

Except for the 11 U.S. citizens working at the embassy, most of the Americans in Afghanistan belong to the International Aid Mission, a multinational charitable organization of missionaries.
