From Times wire services

President Pieter W. Botha left a Cape Town military hospital today, six days after a mild stroke forced him to hand over temporary leadership of the nation to a caretaker president.

Botha, 73, was driven with his wife, Elize, from No. 2 Military Hospital in suburban Cape Town to his official residence, Westbrooke. Presidential aide Jack Viviers indicated that Botha would need a six-week rest from affairs of state. Doctors said the mild stroke on Jan. 18 left Botha’s left arm and leg weakened but did not affect his brain or his speech.
