An influential Iranian newspaper urged Tehran to take up President Bush on his offer to cooperate in securing freedom for American hostages in Lebanon. “When Bush explicitly calls for cooperation with Iran to gain the freedom of American hostages, why shouldn’t we . . . use this chance so that Iranian hostages may also go free?” the Iranian news agency IRNA quoted the daily Ettelaat as saying. Tehran charges that Lebanese Christian Falangist militia kidnaped three Iranian Embassy officials and a fourth Iranian in 1980.
