Walt Disney pictures’ “Oliver & Company” has set a new box-office record for an animated feature on its initial release, with a total of $48,194,729. Don Bluth’s “An American Tail” (Universal) set the previous record of $47,543,875 in 1987. A contemporary musical comedy based loosely on Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” “Oliver”’ is showing on 1,454 screens. The film premiered Nov. 18--the same day as Bluth’s “The Land Before Time” (the first time two animated features have opened head to head). To date, “Land” has earned $42,228,355. Another ‘toon who’s in the bucks these days is Roger Rabbit. The Disney/Amblin co-production, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” which was the top grossing film in America in 1988, has already made $153,188,084 internationally. Add that to the $151,615,310 “Roger” has earned domestically, and you get $304,803,394.
