Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Rancho Santiago Aide to Head Cuesta College

A vice chancellor of Rancho Santiago College has been appointed as the new president of Cuesta College by the San Luis Obispo County Community College District Board of Trustees.

Grace N. Mitchell will leave the Santa Ana community college to succeed retiring Frank Martinez effective March 15, Rancho Santiago officials announced in a prepared statement.

“I am very excited about taking on my first college presidency,” Mitchell said. “I look forward to the challenge of guiding Cuesta through its coming period of growth.”

At Rancho Santiago College, Mitchell is vice chancellor for student affairs and community services, a post she has held since August, 1986.

She has served as vice president of instruction at Cabrillo College near Santa Cruz and has held various administrative, teaching and counseling positions at several community colleges, including Merritt College in Oakland. She is a founding member and current president of the Learning, Assessment, Retention Consortium for California community colleges.

A graduate of DePauw University, Mitchell holds a master’s degree from both the University of Wisconsin and Dominican College, and a doctorate in higher education from USC.
