President Bush will make a two-day trip to China late next month after stopping in Japan for the funeral of Emperor Hirohito, the White House said today.

In announcing the visit, White House press secretary Marlin Fitzwater said the trip may be expanded to include other countries as well. There has been speculation Bush also will visit South Korea.

Bush, who served in the 1970s as the first U.S. envoy to postwar China, will be in Beijing on Feb. 25-26 and will meet with senior Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, Fitzwater said.
