Augmon’s 17 Pace UNLV Over Utah State, 94-68

Sophomore Stacey Augmon scored 17 points and had 8 rebounds to lead the 13th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas Rebels to a 94-68 Big West victory over Utah State Wednesday night.

The victory improved UNLV’s record to 9-0 in the conference and 14-3 overall.

Utah State fell to 4-5 and 6-12.

Augmon led 4 Rebels in double figures as they easily ran past the Aggies in the second half.

Utah State, despite 12 first-half turnovers, trailed by only 41-39 at halftime.

USU center Greg Houskeeper scored 10 points in the first half, mainly from the inside.

UNLV outscored Utah State, 23-9, in the first 9 minutes of the second half, most of the points coming on fast-break dunks and layups by Moses Scurry, Anderson Hunt and David Butler.

The Rebels continued to build their lead as they pressed the Aggies, converted turnovers into easy baskets and hit 12 of 15 free throws in the final 4 minutes.

Butler finished with 16 points, Clint Rossum with 14 and Hunt with 12 for the Rebels. Hunt also contributed 7 assists.

UNLV held Utah State’s Reid Newey, the conference’s leading scorer with an average of 21.4 points a game, to 13 points on 4-for-14 shooting.

Forward Dan Conway led Utah State with 20 points and 9 rebounds, while Houskeeper finished with 12 points.

Utah State shot only 27% in the second half and 39% for the game, while the Rebels shot 53% for the game.
