Waits’ Evolution

Suzanne Tenner’s letter (Jan. 7) missed Robert Hilburn’s point in “Waits Backs Away From His Best” (Jan. 2). I believe Hilburn spoke for many of Tom Waits’ fans.

Anyone familiar with Waits’ music knows he has moved away from intimacy. He has been focusing on unusual sounds, percussive and otherwise. However creative these later songs, they do not carry his early works’ emotional impact.
