Uwe Jens Mey of East Germany won both the 500- and the 1,000-meter World Cup speed skating races at Miola di Pine, Italy, and strengthened his lead in the overall Cup standings.

Mey, who leads the standings with 192 points, won the 500-meter race with a rink-record time of 36.99 seconds. Dan Jansen of the United States, who won at the same distance Saturday, finished second with a time of 37.71.

Mey, who won in the 1,000 Saturday, also won the event Sunday with a time of 1 minute 15.63 seconds, outdistancing Nick Thometz of the United States, who was second at 1:16.16. American Eric Flaim was third at 1:16.17 and Jansen fourth at 1:16.22.
