The son-in-law of a woman shot Sunday in a Clairemont doughnut shop pleaded not guilty Tuesday to attempted murder.

Randy Geering, 36, is charged with trying to kill his mother-in-law, Audrey Erbe, 59, who remains in a coma with a bullet wound in her head. Deputy Dist. Atty. Greg McClain said surgeons cannot operate because the bullet fragments are scattered.

Bail was set at $200,000 by San Diego Municipal Court Judge Raymond Edwards Jr. A preliminary hearing was set for Feb. 15. Geering’s bail will be reviewed on Friday.

Edwards said Geering appeared at the doughnut shop looking for his estranged wife, Diane Geering, who ran into the shop’s restroom.

After the shooting, Geering called KFMB-TV (Channel 8) and was arrested after the station reported the call to police.

Geering’s lawyer said at the arraignment that he had no previous record and had worked for Mercy Hospital.
