Southwest Airlines’ 1988 profit jumped 187% from a year ago to a record $58 million. Revenue increased 11% to $860.4 million. Fourth-quarter earnings rose 81% to $16.1 million, on revenue of $225.8 million, up 16% over 1987. The Dallas-based airline said the earnings increase was primarily because of a 106% gain in operating income but also because of non-operating gains from aircraft sales.
