Alhambra Sets Hearing on Smoking Ordinance
A public hearing on a proposed no-smoking ordinance has been scheduled Feb. 27 at Alhambra City Hall.
The proposed ordinance, which would regulate smoking in city buildings and certain areas in private facilities, such as elevators and restaurants, was approved in concept by the City Council in December. Since that decision, four unions representing city employees have agreed to proposed smoking restrictions.
The council voted last Monday to schedule the public hearing and directed staff to develop an implementation schedule. If approved, the ordinance would go into effect July 1.
Under the proposal, employers with more than five employees would have to provide smoke-free areas for workers. Restaurants with a seating capacity for 40 or more people would have to reserve at least 50% of the seats for non-smokers.
Establishments exempted from the proposed ordinance include bars, banquet rooms used for private gatherings and private homes used as offices.
