Downey : No-Parking Signs to Be Posted

Share

The Department of Public Works will post no-parking signs on about a fourth of the streets in Downey before issuing warning citations to vehicles blocking street-sweeping efforts. The action was approved by the City Council on Jan. 24 and will be effective in 30 days.

“We will make every effort to get the word out,” said William Ralph, director of public works, in responding to an inquiry about whether residents will have ample warning.

The current fine is $19 for illegal parking, Ralph said. The streets will be posted for more than 90 days before fines are given, he said.

Councilwoman Barbara Hayden expressed concern about the signs, saying residents should be allowed to petition if they want the postings on both corners and in the middle of a block as has been planned.

The posting project is estimated to cost $384,494.
