British police said they will investigate allegations that the man who died in West Berlin’s Spandau Prison in 1987 was an impostor, not Nazi war criminal Rudolf Hess. A recent book says the real Nazi lieutenant to Adolph Hitler died in 1941. The book was written by Hugh Thomas, a former consultant surgeon at Spandau, in the British sector of West Berlin, where Nazi war criminals were imprisoned. Britain has said Hess parachuted into Britain in 1941 seeking a peace settlement, but the book says the British knew the man they captured was not Hess. The book also claims that the Hess impostor was murdered at Spandau. A Scotland Yard spokesman said Thomas’ charges will be investigated.
