43 Die in Philippine Clash

MANILA —
Philippine troops backed by helicopter gunships battled Muslim rebels in a southern province, and 43 people were killed, the military said Wednesday. The dead in Tuesday’s battle in Zamboanga del Sur province, about 500 miles southeast of Manila, included 32 guerrillas, eight civilians, two militiamen and one soldier.
