Mike Holovak, who had been the assistant general manager, was named general manager of the Houston Oilers today, succeeding Ladd Herzeg, who resigned.

The announcement was made by Bud Adams, owner of the NFL club, at a news conference at which he said he had accepted Herzeg’s resignation.

Holovak, the only remaining front office executive with NFL experience, joined the Oilers as assistant general manager in 1981 and took over the collegiate and professional scouting operations as vice president for player personnel two years later.

“Of all the many challenges I’ve had, this is the best,” Holovak said during the news conference. “You can’t imagine how much I look forward to it. It’s the greatest thing in the world.”

Herzeg’s surprise resignation late Wednesday ended his stormy career with the team that evolved from a league doormat to championship contenders.

“I feel I’ve accomplished my goals in Houston and at this point in my life, I’m ready for a new challenge. I know there is another mountain out there that needs to be conquered,” Herzeg said in a statement released Wednesday night.
