Two former culinary union leaders and a self-proclaimed Mafia triggerman were found innocent in San Francisco federal court of charges that they plotted to turn over control of a union pension fund to a reputed Mafia financier. A U.S. District Court jury deliberated only two hours before reaching the decision in the case involving former union leaders Sol Schwartz and Frank Marolda and Abe Chapman, who reportedly boasted that he worked as an assassin for Murder Inc. in the 1930s. “There have been 55 counts through the years,” said Marolda’s attorney, Victor VanBourg, “and each time he has been found innocent. It’s time to leave the man alone.”

A story in The Times on Feb. 3 incorrectly identified Frank Marolda as a former official of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders Union when he was acquitted on federal charges. Marolda was president and business manager of Local 19 in San Jose at the time of his acquittal.
