The Air Force handed over million-dollar checks to three Alaskan Indian groups for land for a sophisticated radar system capable of detecting Soviet planes coming from Siberia over the Earth’s curve. The $5.35-million, 11,245-acre land deal represented the final hurdle for the Air Force’s $450-million Alaska backscatter radar system now set for ground-breaking this fall. Alaska is dotted with coastal radar sites that can detect Soviet aircraft flying within several hundred miles of the periphery of the state.
