A man accused of shooting his mother-in-law in a Clairemont doughnut shop pleaded not guilty to a murder charge Friday.

Randy Geering, 36, previously was charged with attempted murder in the Sunday shooting of Audrey Erbe, 59, but the charge was amended when she died Wednesday.

Erbe was shot just above the eye and was in a coma for several days.

Geering’s estranged wife, Diane Geering, was also at the doughnut shop, but hid in the bathroom when she saw Geering in the shop with a gun, Deputy Dist. Atty. Greg McClain said.

San Diego Municipal Judge Raymond Edwards Jr. rescheduled the preliminary hearing for March 2. He allowed the $200,000 bail to continue, even though the charge was amended.

McClain said Geering had assaulted his ex-wife several times before the shooting.
