Local News in Brief : Videos Offered to Amnesty Applicants
Immigration amnesty applicants preparing for their citizenship tests may now borrow video tapes that teach English and U.S. history, the Los Angeles County Library has announced.
The series of tapes, called “Opportunity USA,” was created by the Los Angeles mayor’s office with the cooperation of the Los Angeles Unified School District to help offset the growing shortage of English as a Second Language classes for amnesty applicants.
County library officials noted that more than 800,000 immigrants applied for amnesty in the Los Angeles area under the first phase of the program from May, 1987, to May, 1988. To obtain permanent residence status, applicants must demonstrate a knowledge of English, civics and U.S. history.
The tapes are designed for use by those with little or no fluency in English--and not only Spanish speakers.
