Problem of Cesareans

Thank you for publishing the recent commentary (“Medical Community Is Delivering a Disservice Through Unnecessary Cesareans,” Jan. 8) on the Cesarean epidemic, by Doris Fuller. You are helping to highlight the pain and damage experienced by women as they seek to bring their babies into this world as safely as possible.

Unfortunately, doctors (mostly male) are trained in medical school to deeply distrust the marvelous mysteries of a woman’s body and the intricacies, honed over millenia, of the birth process. As a childbirth educator, I am constantly confronted with the attitude of “It won’t happen to me!” and “My doctor says that he won’t do one unless it’s absolutely necessary.” The statistics prove this to be untrue.

Grass-roots groups such as the Cesarean Prevention Movement are helping women to realize the disservice the medical community is doing to pregnant women in San Diego and countrywide. Until women learn to trust the innate knowledge they have passed down from mother to daughter over the generations, and also require of their doctors the respect and trust due them, the epidemic is bound to continue.

Cesarean prevention should be a priority for each woman who is or ever will be pregnant, for the medical community at large and individual health practitioners dealing with pregnant women. Together, we can make a difference.
