Nonsmokers Speak Out

Thank you for Dirlam’s (unfortunately amusing) article. It’s too bad it was run in the Travel Section and not among the editorials. I have flown in the seats the article centered around, both domestically and internationally. What I do not understand is the attitude of airlines. Making (and enforcing) flights nonsmoking only serves to make jobs easier.

We have swifter check-in, reduced passenger seating problems and cleaner and safer aircrafts. Yet the prevailing attitude is to not upset the smoking passenger. This, however, results in upsetting those of us who fly and don’t smoke. Why don’t the airlines charge extra for smoking seats? The money could offset cleaning costs and upgrade and maintain ventilation.
