A former mental patient pleaded not guilty in New York to charges he raped and killed a pregnant doctor at Bellevue Hospital and agreed to undergo genetic tests that could validate his claim that another person was involved in the slaying. Marvyn Kornberg, defense attorney for Steven Smith, 20, reserved the right to switch to an insanity defense if the tests of Smith’s hair samples and DNA genetic blood tests rule out any other suspects in the Jan. 7 slaying of Dr. Kathryn Hinnant, 33.
