College Roundup : Chapman Surprises Arizona State : Sun Devils’ Home Winning Streak in Baseball Ends at 26

Junior outfielder Chris Cutliff hit a three-run homer and junior designated hitter Ken Briggs had a three-run double as Chapman College defeated Arizona State, 12-4, in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Arizona State.

The loss stopped the Sun Devils’ 26-game home winning streak.

David Bird went the distance for Chapman, allowing nine hits and striking out seven. Bird, a junior left-hander from Sonora High School, is 1-1. He lost to Cal State Fullerton last Tuesday.

“Bird pitched really well,” Chapman Coach Mike Weathers said. “This is a very big win for us. We just came and proved we could play with them.”

Chapman (3-3) went ahead to stay, 4-2, with a four-run second inning that included Cutliff’s first homer of the season.

Briggs’ base-clearing double came in a four-run fourth inning that gave Chapman a 9-3 lead. Briggs is a junior transfer from Cypress College.

Senior third baseman Tony Gardea added a bases-empty homer in the ninth, his second on the year.

Arizona State (4-3) got a two-run home run from Mike Kelly in the first inning. Kelly is from Los Alamitos High School.

In other nonconference baseball games:

UC Irvine 8, Cal State Los Angeles 3--Sophomore Al Rodriguez had three hits and a walk and scored a run for Irvine (1-1-1) in its home opener. Cal State Los Angeles is 1-3.

Senior Rob Johnson pitched three innings for the victory and Ken Whitworth worked the final three innings for the save. John Berger added two hits for Irvine.

USC 2, Cal State Fullerton 0--Host USC scored two runs in the third off Paul Johnson, who took the loss for Fullerton (1-1). After a walk and two singles loaded the bases, Johnson walked Murph Proctor to force home the first run. Bret Boone, a sophomore from El Dorado High School, grounded into a force play for the second run. USC is 5-0.

Cal State San Bernardino 10, Southern California College 2--Dennie Bernie and Joe Aversa had two hits each for visiting SCC (1-1). Larry Jacinto allowed five runs in the first five innings to take the loss for SCC.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 91, Cal Baptist 81--Jeff Bickmore scored 19 points to lead visiting Southern California College (21-2, 9-0). Todd Dixon had 18 and Jim Mansfield 13 also for SCC.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

Chapman 70, Cal State Dominguez Hills 58--Corine Sandfry scored 15 points and Ruth Akahoshi 13 to lead host Chapman (10-10, 5-2). The Panthers put the game away early and led, 40-17, at halftime.
