Ten Airbus A-330 jetliners worth a total $860 million have been ordered for Northwest Airlines, which plans to use the high-tech aircraft in the North Atlantic and on high-volume domestic routes, NWA Inc. said today.

NWA, Northwest’s parent, said the order was the largest to date of the A-330s, valued at $86 million each.

The A-330 is a two-pilot, two-engine aircraft seating 303 passengers in a configuration of three fare classes.

The first A-330 will be delivered in July, 1994, with the remaining nine airplanes to enter the Northwest fleet by the end of 1994, NWA said.

The A-330 will incorporate the technological advances that Airbus has pioneered with the A-320, including fly-by-wire flight control and enhanced avionics, the company said.

Northwest has ordered 100 of the smaller A-320s for domestic use and 20 of the larger A-340s for international travel.

Northwest also selected Pratt & Whitney’s PW-4000 to power the new A-330s. The engine order is worth $250 million, Pratt & Whitney said.
