College, Schools Vote to Cancel April Election
The trustees of the Glendale Unified School District and Glendale Community College voted in separate actions this week to cancel an April 4 board of trustees election because the incumbents have no challengers.
The decision to cancel the election is expected to save the two institutions more than $60,000. School and college board elections in Glendale typically are staged at the same time as city elections, with the three institutions splitting the costs.
As a result of the board actions, three incumbent school board members and three community college trustees whose terms expire this year will be appointed next month to new terms of office. Community college trustees serve three-year terms, and school board members serve four-year terms.
The three Glendale Community College board members are Ted W. Tiffany, Kenneth N. Sweetnam and Phillip C. Kazanjian. The school board members are Charles E. Whitesell, Jane M. Whitaker and June F. Sweetnam.
Under California law, in a nonpartisan election when the number of candidates is the same or less than the number of offices to be filled, an election may be canceled, said Edward Pozorski, deputy Los Angeles County counsel.
The candidates for the uncontested spots are then appointed to office but are treated as elected officials in every respect, he said.
