Montebello : School Board Calls for Ban on Sale of Assault Weapons

Share

Responding to the killings of five Stockton schoolchildren, the Montebello Unified School District has called on the Legislature to ban the production and sale of assault weapons.

“There is a serious and critical need to ban the production and future sale of semiautomatic assault weapons for nonsport purposes and war-related activities,” stated the resolution passed unanimously at the Feb. 2 board meeting.

“The primary responsibility of the Board of Education is to provide a safe and orderly learning environment for our students and staff,” the resolution stated.

The school board joins the growing number of public agencies in the county that are reacting to the schoolyard murders at Cleveland Elementary School in January. The Compton City Council recently adopted an ordinance that bans the sale and possession of the controversial assault weapons within city limits.

And the Lakewood City Council, at the urging of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Lakewood Division, this week passed a resolution similar to the one passed by the Montebello school board.
