Warren, the Bureau of Land Management’s mascot for its wild horse and burro adoption program, was stolen from his pen in Susanville and beheaded a short distance away, BLM spokesman Jeff Fontana said. He said the burro’s body was found in a culvert along U.S. 395 about a quarter of a mile from the Litchfield corrals. The head has not been found. Fontana said the animal, which had been raised in captivity by the BLM, was apparently taken over the weekend. After the body was found, workers discovered that a horse in the corral had a gunshot wound in its head. Fontana said that the Lassen County sheriff’s office was assisting in the investigation and that the BLM had posted a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anybody responsible for the mutilation.
