The Los Angeles City Council has approved spending $150,000 to install 101 mobile homes bought by the city to provide shelter for homeless or low-income families.
The council voted 12 to 0 to allocate the money from the general fund for the Mobile Home Transitional Housing Project designed to provide temporary shelter for homeless people while they search for permanent housing.
Mayor Tom Bradley bought 102 mobile homes in 1987, but they sat in storage for more than a year because many communities opposed plans to place them in their neighborhoods. One of the mobile homes was destroyed last year in an arson fire.
City officials said they hope to place all the mobile homes in the next several months.
Fourteen mobile homes have been placed on federal property adjacent to the Veterans Administration facility in Westwood. Homeless families will begin moving into those homes as early as next week, Bergman said. Two more will be placed on property owned by two churches, one in the San Fernando Valley and another in the downtown area, Bergman said.
