Current senators received more than $12.2 million in honorariums over a five-year period, led by Senate Republican leader Bob Dole of Kansas, who donated to charity more than twice what he kept, a Common Cause study showed. The study also disclosed that senators kept $9.1 million and that 53 of them held on to more than $100,000 each. Dole, who is in great demand as a speaker, received $658,464 in honorariums but kept only $206,415 during 1983-87. Totals for 1988 will not be available until May. In addition to Dole, there were four other senators who collected more than $300,000: Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.), $399,135; Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-S.C.), $365,759; Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (R-Utah), $351,038; and Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), $309,569.
